Statement of Intent - Music Video
For my pop music video, I am using the song 'Lonely Hearts Club' by MARINA. I want to portray the happiness and love of the song and genre through a romance based music video as well as the 13-26 year old female demographic of pop music. I want the music video to fully showcase the artist and song to advertise the music.
My artist is in both the performative and narrative element of the music video as this is common in pop music videos. This showcases the artist fully to her audience as well as demonstrate the artistic talent and energy that cannot be conveyed otherwise through just the recording. The narrative concept of my video will be a girl and boy gradually drifting apart in their relationship. They are not as close and they show no physical affection. Eventually they end their relationship because the girl does not have feelings for him. The girl is the main character and following her breakup, she gains more confidence in herself. Later on the girl becomes increasingly close with another girl and they flirt a lot until they eventually end up falling in love. I want natural day light to provide a natural fun energy to the music video as well as to help bring out the bright colours which are a key aspect of pop music videos.
The performative element will feature the artist, 'Layla', sitting alone at a picnic singing the song, at first entirely separate from the narrative. She is sitting on blanket in a field with food and flowers showing that she is waiting for someone, one again the love element of the music video. Later in the video, the artist impart of the narrative singing some of the words of the song to the main protagonist.
The representations in my music are boy and girl from the first section representing the different ways they react to a dying relationship and throughout the video as a whole, there is a representation of heterosexual and homosexual relationships and how they differentiate and how they are similar. The intertextuality in my music video is Legally Blonde and the music video for Pity Party by Noé. The intertextuality for Legally Blonde is clear through the main protagonist ending a relationship before giving herself time to find herself and understand who she wants to be, as Elle does in the film. The intertextuality for Pity Party will be shown through the performative in which the artist will be singing while having a picnic in a park alone. Both of these show very bright colours and young stars which are key elements of a pop music video.
I hope to portray the work of Sony Music in my filming and editing to produce a bright, eye-catching pop music video. The bright colourful clothing will stand out more and appeal to the young target audience. This also makes it look more upbeat and fits with the upbeat message of the song. The videos will also be edited and tinted to look even more surreal and bright. This will hopefully make the video appeal to the codes and conventions of a pop music video.
